Chennai:
Demonstrating the power of collective action for environmental sustainability, Rotary International District 3234 on Friday launched its flagship environmental initiative, “Amrit Vanam – Lungs of the City,” on the occasion of World Environment Day by organising a massive tree plantation drive at the University of Madras, Taramani campus.
The drive witnessed the planting of 15,000 trees in a single day, marking one of the largest coordinated urban afforestation efforts undertaken by Rotary in the region. The initiative aims to significantly enhance Chennai’s green cover while laying the foundation for a dense and sustainable urban forest.
The programme was organised by Rotary International District 3234 in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Madras, Rotary Club of Madras Central, and the District Rotaract Council, in association with the Green Tamil Nadu Mission.
The event was graced by Tamil Nadu Environment Minister Dr. V. K. Rajeev, who emphasised the importance of collaboration between government bodies and civic organisations in addressing pressing environmental challenges. In his address, he highlighted the urgent need to eliminate single-use plastics and urged individuals and institutions to adopt sustainable alternatives.
The initiative reflects Rotary’s continued commitment to environmental conservation and community-driven efforts to create greener and healthier urban spaces.
