Chennai, June 30:
The death toll in the ammonia gas leak incident in Tamil Nadu’s Tiruvallur district has risen to 16, marking a sharp increase in casualties as more affected workers succumb to their injuries.
The leak occurred at a private seafood processing unit, where a large number of workers—many of them migrant labourers—were exposed to toxic ammonia gas. Several others remain under treatment in hospitals, with authorities closely monitoring their condition.
The incident has raised serious concerns over industrial safety standards, with preliminary findings pointing to possible lapses in safety mechanisms and emergency response systems. Investigations are currently underway to determine the exact cause of the leak and fix accountability.
Officials have assured that necessary steps are being taken to prevent such incidents in the future, even as families of the victims seek justice and stricter enforcement of workplace safety norms.
