Chennai, July 2:
Water storage in Chennai’s major drinking water reservoirs has dropped below the halfway mark, raising concerns about the city’s water security. According to recent data, the combined storage in the five key reservoirs—Chembarambakkam Lake, Puzhal Lake, Poondi Reservoir, Cholavaram Lake, and Kannankottai Reservoir—stands at 5.878 TMC, which is just 49.99% of their total capacity of 11.757 TMC.
The decline is primarily attributed to the absence of fresh inflow into these reservoirs. With no significant rainfall or water inflow from upstream sources, storage levels have gradually reduced, prompting authorities to closely monitor the situation. These reservoirs are crucial for meeting the drinking water needs of millions of residents in Chennai, making their levels a key indicator of the city’s water stability.
Officials are continuing to assess the situation and are expected to take necessary measures to ensure uninterrupted water supply. While there is no immediate crisis, sustained low inflow could put pressure on supply systems if the trend continues. Authorities may rely on water management strategies such as regulated distribution, alternative sourcing, and contingency planning to address potential shortages.
Residents are advised to use water judiciously and stay updated on official announcements, especially as the city navigates a period of limited reservoir replenishment.
