Chennai, July 4:
S.B. Selvakumaran has taken charge as Station Director of Madras Atomic Power Station (MAPS) at Kalpakkam, about 70 km from Chennai.
He assumed charge following the superannuation of M. Seshaiah.
Prior to his assumption of charge, Selvakumaran was the Chief Superintendent of MAPS.
The Madras Atomic Power Station located at Kalpakkam on the east coast is an operating station under the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited and has two Pressurized Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR) plants with installed capacity of 220 MWe each.
A Mechanical Engineering Graduate (Honours) of NIT, Trichy in the year 1988, Shri. Selvakumaran joined the 1st batch of NPCIL In-plant Training in 1989. He has more than 36 years of experience in nuclear industry in the areas of commissioning, operation, maintenance, and upgradation of atomic power plants.
He played an instrumental role in the en-masse coolant channel replacement of unit-2 of MAPS during the period 2002-2003. His exemplary management of the plant situation on 26th December 2004 when tsunami waves struck the shores of Kalpakkam site was crucial in ensuring safety of both units of MAPS, a PIB release said.
