Oficials of the Customs Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) seized 1,967 gms of gold valued at Rs 2.65 crore at the Anna International airport and arrested two Myanmar Nationals, including a woman, who arrived frm Bangkok last evening.
A PIB release here today said the officials intercepted two passengers, a female and an accompanying male, both Myanmar nationals, who arrived from Bangkok. Their personal searches led to the recovery of cut gold bars concealed within their bodies in solid masses and pellets wrapped in rubber pouches and adhesive tape.
The recovered gold, certified as 24-karat gold weighing 1,967 grams (net weight), is valued at Rs. 2,65,82,500. The contraband was seized, and both passengers were arrested under the Customs Act, 1962, and remanded to judicial custody, with further investigation underway.
Chennai Customs advises the public against carrying gold or contraband concealed in baggage or on person, reiterating that smuggling attempts carry severe legal consequences and strict punishment under the Customs Act.
