Villupuram, Aug. 27:

Villupuram police have arrested an electrician on charges of allegedly uploading a woman’s photograph on social media and threatening her, in a case that has once again highlighted the growing misuse of digital platforms for harassment and intimidation.

Police said the accused allegedly circulated or uploaded the woman’s photograph online without her consent and subsequently issued threats to her. Following a complaint, an investigation was launched and the suspect was traced and taken into custody.

The case was registered under relevant provisions dealing with online harassment, criminal intimidation and the alleged misuse of electronic communication platforms. Police are also examining the digital trail associated with the accused, including the social media account or accounts used to upload the photograph and communicate threats.

Investigators are expected to examine whether the accused had previously harassed the woman and whether any other images or personal information were circulated through online platforms.

The incident has raised concerns over the vulnerability of women to cyber harassment, particularly the non-consensual sharing of photographs and the use of social media as a tool for intimidation.

Police have urged people facing such harassment to preserve digital evidence, including screenshots, links, messages and account details, and immediately approach the police or cybercrime authorities instead of engaging with those issuing threats.

The accused was produced before the appropriate court for further legal proceedings, while the investigation continues.
