Chennai, Sept 10:
VCK president Thol. Thirumavalavan has described the alliance led by the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) as more than an electoral arrangement, saying it is an alliance aimed at protecting the Constitution and secularism.
The remarks came after the second consultation meeting of the TVK-led alliance, at which the alliance was formally named the Secular Social Justice Victory Alliance.
The alliance currently comprises five parties — TVK, Congress, VCK, MDMK and Indian Union Muslim League (IUML).
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Thirumavalavan said there was no place in Tamil Nadu for communal and caste-based forces. He stressed the need to protect secularism at the national level as well.
ā€œThis is not merely an electoral alliance, but an alliance to protect the Constitution,ā€ Thirumavalavan said.
MDMK general secretary Vaiko said the name of the TVK-led alliance had been unanimously decided by the participating parties.
IUML leader Kader Mohideen said the alliance would continue under the leadership of TVK in future elections, including the local body and parliamentary elections. He also said the alliance under Chief Minister Vijay would continue in the future.
The announcement comes as the TVK-led ruling alliance prepares to face political challenges, including the upcoming by-elections to Madurantakam and Dharapuram Assembly constituencies.
