Chennai, Oct. 24:
The DMK on Friday criticised the TVK-led government over alleged caste discrimination against a 15-year-old student in Coimbatore, who died by suicide, and the murder of a woman at her house in Sathankulam. Party leaders Udhayanidhi Stalin and Kanimozhi accused the government of failing to ensure public safety and demanded effective action.
DMK youth wing secretary Udhayanidhi Stalin condemned the alleged caste-based harassment faced by the school student. In a statement, he alleged that the boy was discriminated against after questions were raised about his food habits, particularly his consumption of beef. He claimed that the alleged discrimination had contributed to the student’s death and urged the government to take action against everyone found responsible.
Udhayanidhi said educational institutions should remain places where students could learn without facing caste-based discrimination. He called on the government to ensure that no student was subjected to humiliation or harassment on the basis of caste or food choices. He also demanded that the allegations be investigated thoroughly and that appropriate action be taken against those responsible.
Meanwhile, DMK deputy general secretary and MP Kanimozhi condemned the murder of Mary Ragila at her residence in Sathankulam by unidentified persons. She expressed concern over the safety of people despite the Chief Minister’s assurance that everyone would be protected.
Kanimozhi alleged that the government had failed to fulfil its election promises and was concentrating on criticising the previous administration instead of addressing public concerns. She also accused it of failing to deliver on its promise to reduce alcohol consumption and adequately tackle crimes associated with alcohol abuse.
The two incidents have triggered fresh criticism from the opposition over the government’s handling of caste discrimination and law and order. The allegations have placed the focus on the need for a thorough investigation into the student’s death, the identification of those responsible for the Sathankulam murder and effective measures to protect vulnerable sections of society.
