Chennai,Oct 28:
Vellore DMK councillor Teeta Saravanan, who was absconding after allegedly making controversial remarks about Chief Minister Vijay outside Puzhal Central Prison, was arrested in Villupuram on Wednesday.
According to reports, Saravanan had gone into hiding after Puzhal police registered a case against him under four sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Police traced him to Villupuram, where he had allegedly taken shelter after giving the impression that he was travelling to Bengaluru with friends. He was being brought to Chennai for further investigation.
The controversy erupted on Monday night when former DMK minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi was brought to Puzhal Central Prison following his arrest in an alleged ₹100-crore corruption case involving private school approvals and clearances.
DMK supporters gathered outside the prison to protest against the arrest.
Saravanan allegedly said that the present political situation might have been different had Vijay been ‘finished’ in Karur.
The remark, which appeared to refer to the stampede that claimed 41 lives, triggered widespread criticism after the video went viral.
Puzhal police registered a case against Saravanan under four BNS sections, including provisions relating to provocation, public mischief and criminal intimidation. Three special teams were reportedly formed to trace him.
The Karur stampede occurred on September 27, 2025, during a rally organised by Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). The tragedy claimed 41 lives and left several others injured. The incident remains under investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), following the Supreme Court’s decision to transfer the probe from the State police.
Saravanan’s arrest comes amid heightened political tensions between the ruling TVK and the opposition DMK following Anbil Mahesh’s arrest. Police are expected to question the councillor over the circumstances surrounding the remarks and the events outside Puzhal prison.
