Chennai, Nov 2:
Former Additional Superintendent of Police S Velladurai, popularly known as an encounter specialist, joined the AIADMK on Sunday in the presence of party general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami at the party headquarters in Chennai. His entry into the party has triggered speculation that he may seek an AIADMK ticket for the upcoming by-election in Ambasamudram.
The by-election became necessary after AIADMK MLA Esakki Subbiah resigned and subsequently joined the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). Naam Tamilar Katchi chief coordinator Seeman has already announced his intention to contest from the constituency, and Velladurai’s entry could alter the political calculations in Ambasamudram.
Velladurai belongs to the Thevar community, which has a considerable presence in the constituency. His possible candidature is therefore likely to figure in the AIADMK’s assessment of its prospects and candidate selection. There had also been discussions about projecting Seeman as a common Opposition candidate against the TVK, but Velladurai’s induction could complicate such an arrangement.
Velladurai had earlier joined the All India Puratchi Thalaivar Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam, led by VK Sasikala, and contested from Nanguneri in the 2026 Assembly election. He failed to win. Following internal differences, Sasikala was removed from the post of general secretary of the party.
Explaining his latest political move, Velladurai told reporters that the principles of the party he had associated with along with Sasikala did not suit him. His entry into the AIADMK now shifts attention to whether Palaniswami will consider him for the Ambasamudram by-election.
