Pride, sometimes, is a legitimate indulgence. For News Today and me personally, small fishes that we are in a turbulent ocean infested by sharks, pride is the only source of sustenance.

Rajinikanth, who is known for doing impossible things on screen (he holds the record for defying gravity by flying for the longest time and in the process knocking out scores of villains in mid-air before touching ground zero), is the architect of this arithmetic acrobatic.

Nature is beautiful, bountiful, blissful and benevolent. But it also often defies its own nature, and turns brutal and beastly. Gaja is the latest reminder that behind Mother nature’s picture perfect facade lurks a potential monster with multiple faces.

Lamps and light define Bharath’s households, not just its cultural traditions and religious festivals. Lighting a wicker, at least twice a day, is a daily routine, be it a humble hut or a huge palace. Deepavali, the festival of lights, is the highlight of this ageless, deeply ingrained practise whence a simple chore turns into a grand celebration.

I am not an early riser. The sun always beats me at it. So, morning walks are a non-starter. But I do walk into the sun-sets, not just to bid goodbye to the sustainer of life on earth, whom I failed to welcome, but also to keep fit. And also because evening walks are entertaining and even enlightening exercises.

An independent media is often touted as the true barometer of a mature democracy. On that count, despite sustained attempts by various forces, the press in India has largely managed to retain its freedom and emerged unscathed.

Cribbing about inflation without any effort at curbing such infectious and conspicuous consumption does jar a bit. The inflation vampire that has climbed this Jack’s beanstalk is unlikely to come down.

Without prejudice to friends of other faiths, I can say with pride (I concede it may not be fashionable or even prudent, though) that Hinduism, with its myriad godheads, festivals, rituals, traditions, sects and systems is the greatest celebration of God’s diverse creation.
