Chennai: In a bid to create awareness about safe travel, NSS students of Pachaiyappas College in Nungambakkam, recently carried out a campaign at the railway station here.
According to sources, in lieu of NSS Environmental Week, around 100 students participated wearing green vests and carrying placards that had slogans of safe travel in trains and also to be aware of accidents.
The volunteers were assisted by the railway police to highlight the dangers of trespassing on railway lines and unmanned crossings. They held placards in Tamil- which translated to ‘Don’t drink and travel’, ‘Follow railway rules’, ‘Don’t walk on railway tracks’ and the like.
The week-long event which started on 24 September concluded on 28 September.
Apart from the awareness campaign, the department lined up few activities like campus cleaning day (24 September), plastic awareness day (25 September), government museum cleaning day (26 September), plastic wastage collections day (27 September) and campus cleaning day (28 September).
Speaking about the initiative, Haripriya, a techie who was waiting for her train, said,”It is a good move that is being done by the students. Many times, it is the young boys who hang outside the door or travel on footboard. After the tragic incident at St Thomas Mount and the recent Chetpet accident, many are becoming aware of the dangers that are associated with such acts. I hope that commuters atleast now understand the situation and travel safely.”
The programme was presided by principal Dr N Shettu along with members of the faculty and NSS department officers.
