Chennai: A young girl who was abandoned by her aunt at Mambalam Railway Station was rescued by the city police who sent her to a government-run childrens home at Shenoy Nagar.
Sources said Namitha* (13) was found at the station with some of her belongings for a long time by the public who alerted the police.
Constable Stalin who was at the spot asked the girl about her whereabouts.
Namitha told him that her aunt Devi left her at the station saying her father, Jayaraman would come and pick her up.
Police inquiries found that Namithas father had abandoned her and her mother Sumathi years ago. Following this, her mother rented a house in Porur and worked as a domestic help. She put Namitha in a private school in Nungambakkam.
However, Sumathi committed suicide last year, after which, her sister Devi took Namitha to her house.
Namitha told the police that she was often tortured and made to do all the household work. Police said that the girl had burn scars all over her hand. She woke up at 4 am daily and did the chores, it is said.
Recently, Devis mother-in-law said Namitha has to leave as the family was shifting to a new house. Subsequently, Devi left Namitha at Mambalam station assuring her that her father would come and pick her up.
Namitha told the police not to send her back to Devis house fearing torture. Following this, the police admitted her to a home in Shenoy Nagar.
