Chennai: The chorus for implementation of a new Act to do tackle honour killings in the State has been raised again. The demand has come following the brutal murder of inter-caste couple Nandish and Swati by the girl’s family in Karnataka.
CPI(M) State secretary K Balakrishnan, director Pa Ranjith, former MLA Dilli Babu visited the residence of Nandish and conveyed their condolence to the bereaved family.
Balakrishnan said honour killings have been happening in Tamilnadu regularly. He demanded that Rs 1 crore solatium be announced to the bereaved family. “Only three people have been arrested in connection with the murder and the rest of the gang should also be brought to book,” he said.
Ranjith tweeted that it was high time people woke up and rose against honour killings. He also asked people to come together to eradicate casteism from society.
THE COUPLE
Nandish and Swati were residents of Chudagowndanahalli, near Krishnagiri. They fell in love and though they were from different castes, married three months ago and were living in Hosur.
They were spotted by one of the girl’s relatives during a public meeting. The relative tipped off the whereabouts of the couple to Swati’s father Srinivasa who was already on the lookout for the couple.
The relatives had convinced them to come to the police station so that they could settle the issue.
But they were driven to Shivanasamudra, on the banks of the Cauvery, where Nandish was beaten up, tied and thrown into the river before Swati’s eyes, and the same fate followed her minutes later.
Srinivasa, along with two others, has been arrested.
It is said Srinivasa has admitted to committing the murder and a hunt is on for those who helped him in the crime.
