The narrow stretch of Venkateswara Street raises concern among the residents. Even a small spell of rain leaves the road in a pitiable state.

Residents of Venkateswara Street in Nehru Nagar are inconvenienced even for a short spell of rain.
As, their narrow and poorly-laid road is their biggest problem.

Narrating about this, Shanthakumari Swaminathan, says, “This road has been subjected to severe wear and tear for the past six years. It all began in 2006 when officials began to dig the road for supplying water from Palar river.”

“When it rained just for an hour last week, I could not help but notice the mess that it had done to the street. The sanitary and conservancy workers of the Municipality regularly come for checks and question us if we have unwanted materials that could lead to mosquito breeding. But, it is the stagnant water in the street that proliferates the mosquito and nothing from our houses,” she adds.

However, it is learnt that the officials have not taken efforts to restore the road even after digging several times.

“In 2018 alone, the lane has been dug up thrice citing several reasons – mostly for underground drainage system or for transporting Corporation water,” Shanthakumari states.

Another resident of the street reveals that the road was last laid in 2004. “The cement road was at least motorable before beginning the drainage work, but now the entire space has been filled with stones and rubble- putting vehicle-users in a difficult position,” he says, adding, “A senior citizen recently fell here and succumbed to severe injuries.”

Residents now request the authorities to pay attention to this issue and provide solutions at the earliest.

This news report is based on the inputs given by Shanthakumari Swaminathan, a resident of Venkateswara Street.
