Alcohol is consumed by millions and it mints billions. A TASMAC shop at Canal Bank Road in Mylapore often thrives with men waiting to buy that ‘Kick’ of a bottle.
The end result is that most of the consumers pass out by the entrance of the MRTS station near the shop causing hindrance to many.
“It is a trouble not just for rail commuters but even those who pass through the road,” says B Ramini, a resident.
There is a small bridge that connects the entrance of the MRTS station with the Canal Bank Road. The bridge is many a times occupied by men who drink alcohol after buying them from the TASMAC shop which is just a stone’s throw away.
“If the bridge for the pedestrian is closed maybe those who drink won’t have access to sleep by the steps of the railway station,” Ramini observes.
The tiny ‘T’ junction – where Canal Bank Road and RK Mutt Road merge – overlooking the front facade of the railway station rolls with traffic. It might be dangerous for motorists who cross the road as alcoholics swell around here, as noted by Ramini. What if a man under the intense influence of alcohol decides to cross? The consequence maybe horrifying and grievous.
“Sometimes the Railway police come to disperse whoever sits on the steps of the entrance,” says Ramini. “But people start to occupy after they leave. I hope the police consistently patrol the area.” He signs off saying that it will be better if the TASMAC shop is shut down.
