Chennai: For the second time in the year, the office of the Controller of Examinations of Anna University has come under the scanner after a staff was found to be allegedly involved in leaking the question paper of Mathematics-II examination held recently.

He has fled the campus and gone into hiding. The Crime Branch-CID Police today tracked the person responsible for the infamous question paper leak of M-II paper, held for students trying to clear their arrears, on 3 December.

An employee, whose name was not revealed by the Crime Branch police or the varsity, working in the Controller of Examinations office, is believed to be responsible for leaking the paper to his relative who also needed to clear the arrears, according to a statement from the CB-CID.

The special team from the police that had been formed to track the leak that led to the cancellation of the exam for over 50,000 students from across the State, identified the employee responsible for the leak and is looking to arrest him.

He is believed to be absconding though senior police officials said it is a matter of time before they make the arrest.
After the leak was confirmed, by way of an anonymous tip to the university, the Controller of Examination conducted an internal probe among students and staff before escalating the case to the CB-CID on 7 December.

The students to whom the varsity staff passed the leaked paper were found to be his relative Sureshkumar K and his friend Harikrishnan A.

Harikrishnan is still pursuing the course in a private college in the city, while Suresh graduated in 2016. They have been arrested for spreading the leaked paper amongst their peers waiting to write the exam. Both of them are believed to be grappling with arrears in the M-II paper and that is the reason why they resorted to this subterfuge.

“They may have gotten away with it had they not circulated it amongst their friends on WhatsApp. That is how they got caught,” said a senior police official.
