Puducherry: Famous Tamil writer Prapanchan who was battling cancer passed away this morning at a private hospital here today. He was 73.
The renowned writer was a Sahitya Akademi award winner. His original name was S Vaidyalingam.
But everyone knew him by his pseudonym – Prapanchan which adorned the front pages of dozens of Tamil novels he authored and as the bylines of articles he wrote as a journalist in popular Tamil magazines.
Some of Prapanchan’s best-selling novels include Vaanam vasappadum, Mahanadhi, Penmai velga, Padhavi, Erodu Thamizhar uyirodu and so on.
Prapanchan had also scripted many plays and written short stories. His works were translated to all major Indian languages and also German, French, English and Swedish. His play Muttai is part of the curriculum in Delhi University.
Prapanchan was born in Pondicherry and attended the Karandhai College. He graduated as a Tamil Vidwan and started career as a Tamil teacher in Thanjavur before he began a career as a writer. Prapanchan is survived by his wife Pramila Rani and three sons.
