With the sun blazing right above their heads, commuters at MIT junction stop wait for the arrival of a bus to take them towards Hasthinapuram.
After waiting for about an hour, a white board bus passes by, without halting. After the driver is yelled at, it finally stops.
The absence of a shelter and buses skipping the junction are daily concerns here, said a regular commuter, who added that they are unhappy with the attitude of conductors and drivers.
“Patients who visit the government hospital on GST Road are the ones who use this route the most. But owing to the poor service extended by the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC), patients nowadays prefer to use share-autos that are readily available. However, it should be noted that there are people who await the service despite the temperature,” said a resident of Chrompet.
Sources say, this problem is limited to not just those who take the public transportation, but also to those who travel in their private vehicles.
Fazl Ullah, a resident of Hasthinapuram said, “The bus stop should be moved near Indra Cotton Mills and on the other side it should be near the petrol bunk. As the stop is located on the turning of the road, halting of buses leads to bottlenecks.”
“As the width of the road is narrow, when two buses, or any vehicle for that matter, from the opposite side come together, the entire road comes to a standstill,” he added.
It is learnt that the issue has been persisting for a long time now, with no forthcoming action from MTC officials.
“Due to the traffic here, many take the parallel Patel Street for easy travel,” noted Kumar, a regular rider. Regarding the said issue, Pallavaram MLA E Karunanithi has stated that he has informed the depot manager of the irregular services and assured of solving it at the earliest. Meanwhile, calls made to the bus depot went unanswered.
