Chennai: Pioneering ways to beat the plastic pollution, the Madras Medical College (MMC) headed by Dean Dr Jayanthi introduced measures to reduce plastic usage on its premises and also in Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH).
Addressing a press conference here today, she said, “We have been using stainless steel cutlery items since last June and from this January we have made it a mandate to introduce the same for patients. Banana/lotus leaves, wooden ladles and spoons have been put to use in canteens apart from steel plates.”
“Weekly twice hospital authorities carry out inspection and a notice would be served if people are found using plastic items. On failure of complying with it, fine would be laid,” she added.
The hospital and college is known for its active ‘eco club’ that has initiated vertical gardens in three locations and the members met weekly once to maintain the campus clean.
