Chennai: City police arrested a man who was at an ATM centre on Anna Salai with Rs 17.80 lakh in his bag last night.
He has been identified as Rawther Sahib Malik (29), a resident of Nainiappan Naicken Street, Mannady.

Police were surprised to see him with such a huge haul of money and took him to the Triplicane police station for inquiry. They have also informed the Income Tax officials about the unaccounted money.

A passerby alerted the police, following which head Constable Arul and Constable Durai went to the spot and found a man suspiciously depositing cash through an Indian Bank ATM near Tarapore Towers on Anna Salai. As he gave contradictory statements, they examined his bag and found bundles of Indian currency notes in the denominations of Rs 2,000 and Rs 500 valued Rs 17.80 lakh.

Police asked the man to show the source of funds and he failed to show it. Following this I-T sleuths were informed. The Triplicane police have registered a case.
