Man steals Chennai doctor’s phone, lands in prison


Chennai: A man who came to a doctor’s clinic on Wall Tax Road on the pretext of seeking treatment and stole a mobile phone was held by a Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel yesterday.

A police source said Dr Arumugham (64), who worked at Stanley Hospital and was a resident of Wall Tax Road, ran a clinic near his house.

Yesterday, a patient, identified as Umar Farooq (48), came to his clinic as a patient. When Dr Arumugham went to fetch medicines for him, he stole the phone and quietly slipped away.

Umar went to North Beach and made his way to Burma Bazaar to sell the expensive phone. However, on his way, Jayaprakash, who is an RPF personnel, saw him moving in a suspicious manner and figured out that he was there with a stolen phone.

He was subsequently taken to the North Beach Police Station and phone recovered from him.
