Chennai: In a heart-warming gesture, residents of New Colony in Chrompet, Chennai, are organising a farewell party for a Municipality worker, who has been in service for over 37 years.

According to V Santhanam, president of New Colony Residents’ Welfare Association, who is conducting this event, “We are all lucky to have a worker like G Yesu. He has never taken a day off. He was always ready for work. One cannot see someone as dedicated and sincere as him. He cleans cesspools, buries unclaimed corpses and does several other works. He was actively working during the 2015 floods and the Vardah cyclone. It is the duty of the public to recognise such hardworking people and felicitate them.”

Yesu who came to Tamilnadu from Andhra Pradesh in 1970s, says, “I don’t do any special preparation before getting into the cesspool. We have to clean it with bare hands. It would be great, if the government equips us with gloves and other instruments.”

It is also learnt that Yesu gets inside drainage without the influence of alcohol of any kind. Sharing his experiences at work, he says, “I once had to bury two unclaimed corpses, all by myself. Later that day, a few people claimed to be the relatives of the deceased and wanted the bodies. So at midnight, I had to dig up the place in the midst of a heavy downpour. That incident is unforgettable.”

“By God’s grace, both my daughters are happily married and blessed with children. My son, who completed his Mechanical Engineering is in search of a job. Once he gets settled, I will be extremely happy,” he concludes.

Yesu can be reached at 9677120017.
