
Chennai: Chief Minister Palaniswami today honoured Shanmugavel and Senthaamarai, the elderly couple from Tirunelveli, who fought off two armed robbers late on Sunday, with a special award.
The couple, belonging to a place near Kadayam in Tirunelveli district, lived in a house at the entrance to their farm.
When two masked, armed robbers tried to strangle Shanmugavel late Sunday night, he and his wife fought back and saved themselves.
The video that was captured by the CCTVs that Shanmugavel had fixed around his house after earlier robbery attempts, went viral and won praise for the couple from people of all walks of life.
With TV channels interviewing the couple and airing news about them, it caught the attention of all media and prompted the Government of Tamilnadu to give them an award for their bravery.
They travelled to Chennai and received the award this morning from the Chief Minister during the function that followed his hoisting the national flag on account of Independence Day.
