Chennai: Accidents are not new in Velacheri. Minor mishaps happen regularly due to the ever-increasing traffic. In a bid to help those who meet with accidents, Tansi Nagar Welfare Association has come up with a noble initiative.
The organisation has arranged 10 first aid kits which will be kept at several places in Velacheri. The boxes are sponsored by Dr Sabarinath Ravichandar of Dhandeeswaram.
“We will be keeping the kits at bus stops. The auto drivers near these places have agreed to take responsibility of the first aid boxes. We will replace each item when it gets over,” says M Balakrishnan, secretary of Tansi Nagar Welfare Association.
He says that a month ago a minor accident had taken place prompting him to get the first aid kits.
“A woman motorist was hit by a speeding autorickshaw near Tansi Nagar bus stand. Though she escaped with injuries, a first aid kit at the spot would have given her some relief,” he says.
Balakrishnan, who was earlier working with with the city police, says that each traffic signal had a first aid box. “I believe it is still maintained, but many do not know about it. There are many mishaps taking place- pedestrians tripping and falling and accidents due to rash-driving in the night and so on. I thought it was a good to bring it back with more involvement from residents.”
The boxes will be kept at various places including Velacheri police station, bus stands and stops at Vijaya Nagar, Tansi Nagar, Baby Nagar and Dhandeeswaram library.
The box contains an array of emergency aids including cotton, antiseptic, dusting powder, bandage, pins, scissors and tweezer.
Balakrishnan says he is planning to conduct a session in order to educate residents on how to deal with accident trauma victims and administer first aid to them.
