Chennai: Various political leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami today condoled the demise of former Chief Election Commissioner T N Seshan.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, ”Shri TN Seshan was an outstanding civil servant. He served India with utmost diligence and integrity. His efforts towards electoral reforms have made our democracy stronger and more participative. Pained by his demise. Om Shanti.”
In his message, Palaniswami said Seshan was a hard worker and shared a good rapport with everyone. Palaniswami said Seshan had held several key posts in the Tamilnadu Government.
”During his term as the Chief Election Commissioner, he had brought several changes in the system. My heart goes out to Seshan’s family members and I also pray to God that his soul rests in peace,” he said.
In his condolence message Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said, unlike today, there was a time when Election Commissioners were impartial, brave, and feared. ”T N Seshan was one of them. My condolences to his family on his passing,” Rahul tweeted.
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said Seshan had played a key role in making the country’s poll procedures free and fair.
MNM founder Kamal Haasan said Seshan can be remembered as an embodiment of courage & conviction.
”It was he who brought the powerful role of the ‘Election Commission’ into the drawing room discussion of the common man,” he tweeted.
Seshan was not keeping good health for the past couple of years and passed away around 9.30 pm on Sunday at his residence in the city.
