Chennai, Mar 3: The lighting provided at the Corporation Ground in Venkatanarayana Road, has come in for wide appreciation from all quarters.

”The whole ground is visible during the dark hours and our entire family had a nice time being here,” said Krishna Kumar, a resident of Dhandapani Street.

The lights have been provided as part of the Smart City project, along with upgradation of the play area with various other features, informed an official of the civic body.

”The entire ground has been levelled and plans are on for an indoor badminton court, among other facilities,” he added.

Even for walkers, especially senior residents of streets like Kannadasan Salai, Dhandapani Street, Soundararajan Street and Ramanujam Street, the new arrangements facilitate easy work-outs.

”Earlier, except the basketball court, the entire ground will be dark. We used to fear entering into the area after dusk”’, said Arokyaraj, a senior resident here.

”It’s good to see that the authorities have taken adequate care in developing the space”’, he said.

South Madras Walkers and Joggers Association, functioning at Dr Natesan Park, is also playing a key role in bringing up new facilities here.

”We have asked the civic body to provide an exclusive gym for women at the park and convert the unused facility at the grounds for public convenience,” commented Radhakrishnan, an office-bearer of the association.

The newly-added amenities have brought back children to the ground, it can be said.

”The strength will go up considerably during the summer vacation. It is nice to see parents accompanying, and working out simultaneously, as and when their children play,” noted a coach here.
