Chennai: Alangulam MLA, DMK senior leader and former Minister Poongothai Aladi Aruna has been reportedly brought to the city for treatment after she allegedly had an overdose of sleeping tablets on 18 November night.
Sources said she was brought here by flight.
Poongothai was being treated at a private hospital in Tirunelveli and was said to be recovering well.
The hospital had even issued a statement on her health condition which read, āPoongothai was brought in an unconscious state. At present she remains awake, responsive and her vital parameters are satisfactory. Her current clinical condition warrants a stay in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). She is being continuously monitored by the team of doctors.ā
The reason for the medicine overdose is not known, though there were unconfirmed reports that she had attempted suicide.
Her family maintained that she was admitted to hospital due to previous health issues such as blood pressure and diabetes.
However, the events leading to her hospitalisation suggest an issue within the DMK party.
Sources claim that Poongothai was verbally abused during a booth committee meeting.
An update on her health condition is awaited.
