Chennai: Customs officials seized gold worth Rs 14.12 lakh at the city airport Monday.
According to a press release, “Syed Nadeem Ur Rehman (33) who had arrived by an Indigo flight, was intercepted at the exit on suspicions of carrying gold”.
As he was evasive in his replies, his bag was taken for examination, upon which five Tiger balm glass bottles, six Nivea Cream boxes, three mini toy race cars and two nail cutters were found concealed inside, among his personal items.
“Further, 11 round gold cut pieces were found hidden in these items, with the nail cutters being multifunctional and having bottle opener and small knife attachments, all made of gold”, the release said.
A total of 19 gold cut pieces weighing 286 grams valued at Rs 14.12 lakh, were thus recovered and seized under the Customs Act. Further investigation is underway.
