Chennai:Ā VK Sasikala, who is serving a prison sentence at the Parappana Agrahara Central Prison in Bengaluru, might be released anytime now, said Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) deputy general secretary P Palaniappan.
This statement comes two weeks after Sasikala, who was a close aide of former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, paid the fine amounts of ā¹10 crore and ā¹10,000 imposed on her.
Serving the sentence after being convicted in a disproportionate assets case, her fine amount was paid on her behalf by her relatives, according to her counsel Raja Senthoor Pandian.
Earlier, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami had said that Sasikalaās release will have no impact on the ruling AIADMK.
āThe release of Sasikala from Bengaluru prison will not change the AIADMKās decision to keep her and her relatives away from the party and government affairs,ā he told reporters in Coimbatore last month.
āAs far as we are concerned, there will be no changeā, he said in response to a question on whether Sasikalaās release will cause any changes in the party.
She was earlier scheduled to be released on 27 January, 2021, it may be noted.
But with the fine amount being paid, and the prison authorities being informed about the same, her release is now imminent, much to the joy of AMMK party workers.
