
Chennai: The Principal Opposition AIADMK in Tamilnadu has urged Prime Minsiter Narendra Modi to instruct the Finance Ministry to release funds to carry out timely, rescue, relief and rehabilitation operations in rain affected districts and flood-hit Chennai city.
In a letter to Modi, AIADMK coordinator and former Chief Minister O Panneerselvam said heavy rains battered Chennai and neighbouring districts leading to flood water stagnation up to three feet.
The met department has predicted heavy rainfall in almost all parts of the State for the next five days, in view of a cyclonic rotation over the southeast Bay of Bengal that would lead to formation of a low pressure today.
Stating that the people of the state were grateful to the Prime Minister on assuring of the Centre’s support in relief and rescue operations, he said apart from relief and rescue operations, ex-gratia payments have to be made for the damages to huts and dwellings in the affected areas apart of restoration plans.
In addition to this, reconstruction of public infrastructure has to be carried out, Panneerselvam said and urged Modi to direct the Finance Ministry to release funds for rescue and relief works.
