Chennai: The deep depression over southeast Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm, named Jawad, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said.
The cyclone is expected to skirt the coasts of north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha on Saturday morning, before advancing north-northeast to West Bengal.
According to the latest update by the India Meteorological Department, the low-pressure intensified into a deep depression on Friday morning and will further intensify into cyclonic storm ‘Jawad’ over the next 12 hours. As a part of it, heavy to extremely heavy rainfall has been predicted in several parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and the Gangetic West Bengal.
Heavy rain warning has been issued to southern districts of Tamilnadu too, including Kanyakumari and Tirunelveli.
Fishing activities have been prohibited within the territorial waters along the entire coastline of Odisha from 3 to 5 December for safeguarding the life and assets of fishermen due to impeding Cyclone Jawad.
In its latest bulletin, the IMD said the weather system was moving at a speed of 30 kmph and lay 480 km south-southeast of Vishakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, 600 km south-southeast of Gopalpur in Odisha, and 700 km south-southeast of Paradip at 8.30 am on Friday.
