Third wave has started in TN, get ready for more cases: Subramanian

Ma Subramanian

Chennai: The third wave of the Covid-19 pandemic has started in Tamilnadu, Health Minister Ma Subramanian said in Chennai.

Subramanian said we can assume that the third wave has begun and a sudden surge in the cases in the form of ‘Tsunami’ of Covid-19 is expected.

Earlier this week, there were about 600 cases and the numbers have increased three times towards the end of the week, he said.

Though Chennai continued to lead the State in vaccination, more than five lakh persons had not yet received even one dose of the vaccine, he said.

Subramanian said the state has reported maximum number of new Covid cases on May 21 (36,184).

‘We are not sure whether more number of cases would be reported at this time. However, Omicron patients are testing negative within a short duration,’ he said.

Healthcare workers and other frontline workers will also be given booster doses of vaccines, Subramanian said. ‘Booster dose will be given 9 months from the second dose and the Union Government is yet to give the guidelines on which vaccine will be given. The administration of booster dose for those aged 60 and above will start on 10 January.’
