Gold worth Rs.1.20 cr seized, 2 arrested at Chennai airport


Chennai: Officials of the Customs Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) seized 2.766 kg gold worth Rs 1.20 crore in two separate incidents and arrested two passengers at the Anna International airport here.

A release from the Office of the Commissioner of Customs said based on intelligence, Jameem Kamal Nasar (35), who arrived from Dubai by Emirates flight, was intercepted by the officers.

On examination, one packet wrapped with white colour butter paper weighing 1,773 gms was found stitched in his undergarments, which resulted in recovery of one gold ingot weighing 1,530 gms. He was arrested.

In another case and in a similar modus operandi of gold smuggling Madurai resident, Syed Abuthahir (38), who arrived from Colombo by Sri Lankan Airlines flight was arrested.

Officials found one packet wrapped with white colour butter paper weighing 1,451 gms stitched in his undergarments, which resulted in recovery of one gold ingot weighing 1,236 gms. He was also arrested.

Totally, gold weighing 2.766 kgs valued at Rs.1.20 crore was seized under the Customs Act, 1962 and both the passengers were arrested for contravening the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962. Further investigation is under progress.
