Chennai: For the first time in the last two years, there was zero Covid patient at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH) on Tuesday.
Dean Dr E Theranirajan tweeted, ‘First time we have 0 patients at
RGGH. My heartfelt thanks to everyone to reach this milestone’.
Ever since the first Covid patient was admitted on 7 March, 2020, the
RGGGH was flooded with patients as the pandemic spread significantly
across the country.
There was also high demand for oxygen beds, despite the Tamilnadu
government ramping up the medical facilities on a war footing.
More than 65,000 Covid patients were treated since March 2020 at the
RGGGH.
‘As there has been considerable reduction in cases during the last weeks, we had one or two cases a day for the last one month. While most of the
cases were treated easily, those who had comorbidities and were not vaccinated, had symptoms,’ the Dean said.
He said a very few unvaccinated patient showed symptoms of respiratory
infection and illness and required Continuous Positive Airway Pressure
(CPAP) to overcome the breathlessness.
Observing that RGGGH was prepared to handle the situation in the event of
an outbreak in future, the Dean said ‘we have not removed the beds and
wards created for Covid patients.’
