Debate, discussion

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Tuesday made a pitch for the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and hit out at Opposition parties for allegedly inciting minority communities against it.The PM’s statement comes a week after the 22nd Law Commission invited the views of the public and “recognised” religious organisations on the UCC within 30 days. UCC is the idea of having a common code of personal laws for people of all religions. Personal law includes aspects of inheritance, marriage, divorce, child custody, and alimonyCongress leader P Chidambaram said the comparison between a family and the nation to justify Uniform Civil Code like PM Modi did in his address to the party workers in Madhya Pradesh is flawed. Advocating for a Uniform Civil Code, PM Modi asked whether a family runs on two sets of rules. The pitch for UCC ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha election became a fodder for political discourse while Chidambaram on Wednesday put forward his opinion that the comparison is not correct.Meanwhile, the DMK has contended that a uniform code should first be applied to the Hindus, who will then have to allow people from all castes to pray in temples. “Uniform Civil Code should be first introduced in the Hindu religion. Every person including Scheduled Castes and Tribes should be allowed to perform pooja in any temple in the country. We don’t want UCC (uniform Civil Code) only because the Constitution has given protection to every religion,” said DMK’s TKS Elangovan.
