CMRL enhances women’s safety, launches Helpline Number

In a significant stride towards ensuring the safety and well-being of women commuters, the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has introduced a dedicated helpline number, further bolstering its efforts to create a secure environment within the metro train network. This initiative comes as a reassuring development for women passengers, alleviating concerns about their safety while traveling.
With the implementation of various safety measures, including the deployment of a dedicated “pink squad,” establishment of separate waiting areas and signage, and provision of separate public toilets, CMRL has transformed the commuting experience for women in Chennai. Gone are the days when safety was a primary concern for female passengers, as CMRL’s proactive approach has ushered in a new era of confidence and security.
On the occasion of International Women’s Day celebrated on March 8th, CMRL unveiled the helpline number 155370, designed to operate round-the-clock, offering assistance and support to women passengers encountering any issues during their metro journeys. This helpline serves as a lifeline for women, providing essential services such as emergency response, ensuring swift intervention in case of any untoward incidents.
Crucially, the helpline number is currently active on the BSNL network, with plans underway to extend its activation to other networks, ensuring accessibility for a broader spectrum of commuters. This expansion will further enhance the reach and effectiveness of the helpline, reaffirming CMRL’s commitment to inclusivity and responsiveness to the needs of all passengers.
In addition to the helpline initiative, CMRL has implemented a range of safety measures tailored specifically for women commuters. These include the provision of dedicated women’s coaches, reserved seating arrangements, wheelchair accessibility, and comprehensive CCTV surveillance, all aimed at creating a secure and comfortable travel environment.
Furthermore, CMRL goes the extra mile to cater to the needs of women passengers by enforcing a zero-tolerance policy towards sexual harassment, offering job opportunities through its website, and ensuring well-lit pick-up and drop-off areas for added convenience and peace of mind.
