Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker M Appavu has clarified that there are no legal obstacles to appointing K Ponmudy as a minister in the state government. Addressing media personnel, Speaker Appavu assured that administering the oath of office to Ponmudy by the governor would not pose any legal challenges, particularly in light of the upcoming parliamentary polls.In response to queries regarding the governor’s role in administering the oath of office to Ponmudy, Speaker Appavu emphasized that the law applies uniformly across all states. He expressed confidence that the process of appointing Ponmudy as minister would proceed smoothly once the parliamentary polls are notified.
Regarding the legality of Ponmudy’s appointment following the suspension of his conviction, Speaker Appavu clarified the procedural steps involved. He outlined that the Chief Minister would propose Ponmudy’s appointment to the governor, who would then formally administer the oath of office. Speaker Appavu expressed optimism that the process would proceed without any complications.
Addressing concerns about the governor’s absence, Speaker Appavu stated that the governor had departed for Delhi on a pre-scheduled visit. However, he reassured that there should be no issues in arranging the swearing-in ceremony upon the governor’s return.
It is understood that the governor has sought legal advice from the office of the Advocate General of India to ensure compliance with legal requirements in appointing Ponmudy as a minister in the state government.
