Extended power outage worry residents

The city of Chennai is grappling with a growing problem of extended power disruptions and voltage fluctuations, causing inconvenience and frustration among residents in various neighborhoods. Despite assurances from the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco) regarding uninterrupted power supply during public examination times, the ground reality paints a different picture.
In a recent meeting, Minister Thangam Thennarasu emphasized the need for swift resolution of any unexpected reasons for power disruptions within 30 minutes. However, many areas, including the prominent residential locality of Mylapore, have experienced power cuts lasting up to 45 minutes in recent days. According to Tangedco officials, the issue in Mylapore was attributed to cable faults, adding to the residents’ dissatisfaction.
Similar power disruption issues have been reported from various other areas such as Mogappair, Choolaimedu, Jafferkhanpet, and Pallavaram. Residents in these localities have struggled to reach Tangedco’s Minnagam call center for assistance. Subsequently, Tangedco officials revealed that the power outages were caused by feeder tripping due to overload, damage to underground cables due to Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) works, and other departmental issues.
Acknowledging the severity of the situation, Tangedco has taken steps to address the challenges promptly. Teams have been formed in all divisions to expedite the restoration of power and minimize disruptions.
