EC files cases against OPS, Annamalai for violating poll code

The Election Commission (EC) has taken swift action against former AIADMK leader O Pannerselvam (OPS) and BJP state unit president K Annamalai for alleged violations of the model code of conduct during campaigning for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls in Tamil Nadu.

OPS, who was ousted from the AIADMK, is contesting the elections as an independent candidate with the support of the BJP-led NDA coalition in Ramanathapuram constituency. The EC has registered a case against OPS under three sections for reportedly rewarding women who performed ‘arathi’ (a welcome ritual) during his campaign in Aranthangi. According to a complaint backed by video evidence, OPS allegedly distributed Rs 500 to women participating in the ritual, in violation of electoral rules.
Meanwhile, BJP state unit president Annamalai also faced the EC’s ire for campaigning beyond the permitted timings in Tiruchy. Annamalai was reportedly canvassing for an AMMK candidate when the violation occurred.
