The Katchatheevu issue remains a contentious topic, casting a shadow over Indo-Sri Lankan relations for decades. Situated in the Palk Strait, this small island has been a bone of contention between India and Sri Lanka since its controversial cession to Sri Lanka in 1974. Despite historical claims and the strategic importance of Katchatheevu, India’s relinquishment of the island to Sri Lanka through the Indo-Sri Lankan Agreement of 1974 has sparked persistent grievances among Indian fishermen and politicians alike. One of the primary concerns stemming from the transfer of Katchatheevu is the impact on traditional fishing rights of Indian fishermen in the surrounding waters. Fishermen from Tamil Nadu, in particular, have long relied on the rich fishing grounds near Katchatheevu for their livelihoods. However, post-transfer, they have faced increased harassment and arrests by the Sri Lankan navy, exacerbating tensions and humanitarian concerns.
Moreover, the strategic implications of Katchatheevu cannot be overlooked. Its proximity to international shipping routes and potential for maritime security threats necessitate a collaborative approach between India and Sri Lanka in addressing security challenges in the region. Yet, the lack of a mutually agreed-upon resolution to the Katchatheevu issue hampers efforts to foster meaningful cooperation. Efforts to address the Katchatheevu issue have been sporadic and often overshadowed by other bilateral priorities.
