Panic at Puzhal Prison as prisoners create uproar

Panic gripped Puzhal Central Prison on Thursday night when a group of eight remand prisoners caused a commotion, breaking tube lights in their cells and threatening self-harm. The incident occurred in the high-security block of Prison II, which houses remand prisoners.
The prisoners involved in the uproar were identified as Napoleon alias Kutty Pura, 30, of Ambattur; ‘Boxer’ Murali, 27, of Pulianthope; Sharath Babu, 30, of Korrukupet; Syed Mohammad Basha, 28, of Adyar; Rajasekar, 25, of Thiruverkadu; Arun, 25, of Anakaputhur; Ravichandran, 30, of Anakaputhur; and Jayakumar, 25, of Madurai. They were housed in cell numbers 15, 16, 17, 18, and 19.
According to police sources, around 8:45 PM, the prisoners broke the tube lights inside their cells and began shouting slogans against the prison officials, demanding their release and claiming innocence. The situation escalated when Rajasekar and Napoleon started inflicting injuries on themselves using the broken tube lights. When prison staff attempted to intervene, the prisoners threatened to attack them.
Additional prison officials rushed to the scene, overpowered the prisoners, and brought the situation under control. The injured prisoners were given first aid at the prison hospital, and the others were relocated to different cells.
Puzhal police have registered a case against the prisoners for assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from the discharge of his duty and criminal intimidation.
