Take stringent measures to end liquor deaths: Kamal

Following the tragic hooch incident in Kallakurichi district that has claimed 36 lives, Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) president Kamal Haasan has called on the Tamil Nadu government to establish de-addiction centres across the state to aid those struggling with alcohol addiction.

In a heartfelt social media post, the actor-turned-politician expressed his condolences to the bereaved families and wished a speedy recovery to those hospitalized due to the consumption of methanol-laced arrack. Haasan highlighted the widespread shock and grief felt throughout Tamil Nadu over this preventable tragedy.

Kamal Haasan emphasized the urgent need for the state government to take stringent actions against the sale of illicit liquor. “The government should act with an iron fist against hooch sellers to prevent such incidents in the future,” he stated. By implementing tougher enforcement measures, the state can curb the illegal production and distribution of spurious liquor, potentially saving many lives.

In addition to cracking down on hooch sellers, Kamal Haasan underscored the importance of providing support to those addicted to alcohol through the establishment of de-addiction centres. “It is high time that everyone participates in the war against addiction,” he urged. De-addiction centres would offer essential rehabilitation services, helping individuals overcome their dependency on alcohol and reducing the demand for illicit liquor.

Kamal Haasan’s call for action extends beyond governmental measures. He encouraged community participation in combating addiction, highlighting the collective responsibility to address this pervasive issue. By raising awareness and providing support, communities can play a crucial role in reducing the impact of alcohol addiction.
