Expert panel recommends education reforms to CM

A 14-member expert committee, headed by retired Judge Murugesan, has submitted a comprehensive report to Chief Minister MK Stalin, recommending several significant measures aimed at improving the education system in Tamil Nadu. The committee, formed in June 2022, was tasked with formulating the Tamil Nadu State Education Policy (SEP).

Key Recommendations

One of the most notable recommendations of the committee is the cancellation of the controversial NEET medical entrance examination. The report also suggests eliminating public exams for students in Classes 3, 5, and 8, which has been a subject of debate among educators and parents.

The panel has urged the implementation of a two-language policy in schools, focusing on English and Tamil. This move is aimed at enhancing linguistic skills while preserving cultural heritage.

The committee has recommended that education be brought under state purview, emphasizing the importance of local governance in addressing the specific needs and challenges of the state’s education system.

Another significant suggestion is to consider the marks of Class 11 for college admissions, along with the existing criteria of Class 10 and 12 scores. This recommendation aims to provide a more comprehensive evaluation of a student’s academic performance.

Chief Minister MK Stalin, upon receiving the report, is expected to review the recommendations with relevant stakeholders, including educationists, policymakers, and the general public, to decide on the implementation of these reforms.
