
A shocking incident unfolded at the Kalaignar Centenary Government Hospital in Guindy, Chennai, when Dr. Balaji, an oncologist, was stabbed while on duty. The attack was reportedly carried out by a middle-aged man, allegedly frustrated over inadequate treatment provided for his mother.
Dr. Balaji was immediately rushed for emergency treatment and is currently under intensive care. The incident prompted a swift response from the Guindy police, who arrived at the scene, secured the area, and seized the weapon used in the attack. Two individuals connected to the incident were taken into custody.
The incident has raised concerns about the safety of medical professionals and underscores the need for enhanced security measures in hospitals to protect healthcare workers.
Speaking to News Today, Dr Raveendranath, founder-general secretary, Doctors Association for Social Equality, said, ‘adequate security should be provided to doctors. More assistant physician should be appointed in Government Hospitals. Counselling session should be conducted for patients and care-takers. Medical infrastructure should be given a boost’
Reacting to the incident, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin expressed his concern on social media, stating, “The attack on Dr. Balaji, working at the Guindy Specialty Hospital, is shocking. The assailant was arrested promptly. I have directed that Dr. Balaji receive all necessary treatment and that a thorough investigation be conducted.”
He further highlighted the dedication of government doctors who tirelessly serve patients without regard to time and reiterated that ensuring their safety is a collective responsibility. The Chief Minister assured that the government will take all necessary measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
