The Tamil Nadu government has announced the public holiday schedule for the year 2025, designating 23 holidays in total, with three of these falling on Sundays.
During the government holidays, all government offices under Tamil Nadu’s control will remain closed. This will also apply to all public sector institutions, corporations, and boards operating under the state government. In addition, Saturdays and Sundays will be observed as regular holidays.
Notably, there will be one fewer holiday in 2025 compared to 2024 due to the overlap of Gandhi Jayanti and Vijayadashami, reducing the total number of public holidays.
For the Pongal festival in 2025, which will fall on Tuesday, January 14, the holidays will begin on Saturday, January 11, and continue through Sunday, January 12. With January 13 being the Bhogi festival, the government may announce a holiday for this day as well. If this happens, the entire period from January 11 to 16 could potentially become a continuous break. Additionally, if a one-day holiday is announced on January 17, employees could enjoy a 9-day break during the Pongal celebrations.
Other key holidays in 2025 include:
March 31 (Monday) for Ramzan
April 14 (Monday) for Tamil New Year
April 18 (Friday) for Good Friday
August 15 (Friday) for Independence Day
September 5 (Friday) for Milad-un-Nabi
October 20 (Monday) for Diwali
During these festivals, three consecutive days off could be expected, as some of the holidays fall on weekends.
This holiday schedule offers extended breaks, with opportunities for employees to plan vacations and spend more time with family during significant cultural and religious events.
