The Tamil Nadu government has announced plans to begin distributing tokens for the Pongal gift hampers five days before the festival, according to Additional Chief Secretary J. Radhakrishnan. The gift hampers, a much-anticipated annual initiative, are provided to family cardholders across the state during the harvest festival of Pongal.
Last year, the Pongal hampers included one kilogram of brown rice, one kilogram of sugar, whole sugarcane, and â‚č1,000 in cash, alongside free dhotis and sarees. This year, public expectations are high as they await an official announcement from Chief Minister M.K. Stalin regarding the contents of the 2024 gift package.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, Radhakrishnan revealed that preparations are underway to procure materials such as rice, sugar, and clothing to assemble the hampers. “The Chief Minister will soon make an announcement about this year’s Pongal gift hampers. Distribution of the packages will begin five days before the festival,” he stated.
Pongal, a significant festival in Tamil Nadu, is celebrated with joy and gratitude for the harvest. The government’s initiative aims to bring cheer to families across the state, particularly benefiting those in need. The announcement of the token distribution timeline has added to the festive anticipation, with the public eagerly awaiting further details from the Chief Minister.
This annual tradition reflects the state government’s commitment to ensuring a joyous Pongal celebration for all Tamil Nadu residents.
