Police arrested a 60-year-old former AIADMK functionary, Ponnambalam, after he allegedly misbehaved with his women tenants near Padappai on Wednesday.
Ponnambalam, who served as the joint secretary of the Kundrathur AIADMK union, had rented a house to several women working in a firm in Kundrathur. Three weeks ago, he allegedly misbehaved with one of the tenants, prompting the women to vacate the house and relocate to Keel Padappai.
However, Ponnambalam reportedly contacted the women a few days ago, asking them to come and collect the advance rent they had paid. When the women arrived at his house on Wednesday to retrieve the money, Ponnambalam allegedly locked them in a room and started misbehaving with them.
The women fought back, using slippers and broomsticks to defend themselves. A video of the incident, showing Ponnambalam abusing and attacking the women, quickly went viral on social media.
The women managed to escape and immediately alerted the police control room. A team from the Manimangalam police responded quickly and apprehended Ponnambalam when he attempted to flee the scene.
The police have filed a case against Ponnambalam, and further investigations are underway.
