A new bridge constructed over the Cooum River at Thiruverkadu, Chennai, was inaugurated on Tuesday, 11th February 2025, by Tamil Nadu Highways Minister E.V. Velu. Built at a cost of ₹18.50 crore, the bridge replaces an old causeway that frequently flooded during the monsoon season.
The newly constructed bridge is 94 meters long and 17 meters wide, designed to be pedestrian-friendly with dedicated walkways and bicycle tracks. The project aims to enhance connectivity and ease commuting for residents of Veeraraghavapuram, Avadi, Poonamallee, Kaduvetti, and Seneerkuppam, among other nearby areas.
The Cooum River, one of the shortest classified rivers flowing into the Bay of Bengal, had long posed accessibility challenges due to flooding. The new bridge is expected to provide a much-needed solution, ensuring safer and smoother transportation for local communities.
Several key dignitaries attended the inauguration ceremony, including Minister for Minorities Welfare S.M. Nasar, Highways Secretary R. Selvaraj, and Tiruvallur District Collector M. Prathap. Their presence underscored the bridge’s significance as an important infrastructure development for the region.
