CMRL explores regional rapid transit system to Parandur

With plans underway for a second airport in Parandur, Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is exploring the development of a Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) to provide efficient connectivity. The proposed RRTS aims to ensure faster and seamless travel to the upcoming airport, reducing transit time for passengers.
As part of the study, CMRL is evaluating two potential corridors for the RRTS. The first route will connect Chennai Airport to Parandur via Sriperumbudur, while the second will link Chennai to Kancheepuram and Vellore, passing through Parandur. Unlike the metro rail, which has stations every 1-2 km, the RRTS stations will be placed approximately 10 km apart. This system will feature semi-high-speed trains operating at 100-120 kmph, significantly cutting down travel duration.
The 2025 State Budget has also proposed feasibility studies for three major RRTS corridors across Tamil Nadu. These include Chennai–Chengalpattu–Tindivanam–Villupuram, Chennai–Kancheepuram–Vellore, and Coimbatore–Tiruppur–Erode–Salem. These projects aim to enhance regional connectivity and boost economic activity in the respective corridors.
In addition to the RRTS, CMRL is considering extending metro rail connectivity from Chennai Airport to Sriperumbudur. Beyond Sriperumbudur, the RRTS will continue towards Parandur, ensuring last-mile connectivity. The feasibility study for this project is expected to commence soon.
With these initiatives, Tamil Nadu is set to witness a significant transformation in its transportation infrastructure, ensuring faster and more efficient transit for commuters and travelers.
